In response to the request by Phil Clifford for information on what
NOVITA apparatus is or was, I found the following description in :-
MINE RESCUE WORK by R. McAdam and D. Davidson. Published by Oliver &
Boyd 1955. page 97-98.
NOVITA REVIVING APPARATUS.
The Novita apparatus for the administration of oxygen is fitted
with a hand operated control valve which allows the rate of feed of
oxygen to be regulated at any required quantity between 0 and 30 litres
per minute.
The twin-cylinder Novita reviving apparatus, shown in fig. 72,
is made by Siebe, Gorman and Co., and consists of the following
component parts:
(1) Two oxygen cylinders are provided, each holding 15 cu. ft.
of oxygen at a pressure of 120 atmospheres, and each having its own main
cylinder valve.
(2) A T-piece is used to couple the cylinders together and
connect them to the breathing bag. Into this T-piece is fitted a line
valve for each cylinder, a pressure gauge, a reducing valve, and the
fine adjustment, hand-operated, oxygen control valve. The pointer on the
control valve moves round a dial which is calibrated from 0 to 30
litres, and the position of this valve and pointer regulates the feed of
low-pressure oxygen to the breathing bag.
(3) A breathing bag. This small flexible rubber bag forms a
reservoir of oxygen, and the movement of the walls of the bag give the
operator an indication of the patient's respiratory efforts.
(4) A rubber tube and mask lead the oxygen from the breathing
bag to the patient's nose and mouth. The mask is fitted with none-return
inlet and outlet valves, and it is held close to the patient's face by
means of elastic straps which pass round his head.
The sequence of operations when using the Novita reviving
apparatus is as follows:
(a) Check that the oxygen-feed regulating valve is closed.
(b) Open one cylinder valve and its line valve.
(c) Open the oxygen-feed regulating valve gently and allow the
breathing bag to
become about three-quarters full.
(d) The operator then fits the mask on himself and ensures that
the apparatus is
functioning properly.
(e) Fit the mask on the patient's face, adjust the head-straps,
and, if necessary,
adjust the oxygen-feed regulating valve to suit the
patient's requirements.
The Novita reviving apparatus is simple to use, reliable in operation,
and of robust construction. The overall dimensions of the carrying case
are 25½ X 15¼ X 8½ in., the complete apparatus is 64 lb. in weight, and
the carrying case is fitted with two handles to ease the difficulties of
hand transport
Phil,
If you require a copy of fig. 72 I may be able to scan it for
you. Please let me know.
Best of luck in your research,
Stuart (Cheg) Chester.
