Research Fellow
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science offers a research post as
part of an independent research unit directed by H. Otto Sibum. The current
project will concentrate on research practices in physical sciences and
technology in early 19th century Germany. Outstanding scholars in history of
science and technology as well as related disciplines like archeology/
anthropology, economic and art history whose research expertise will
contribute to the exploration of material practices and object related
knowledge traditions in physical science, technology, arts, crafts and
industry are invited to apply. Research topics of particular interest include:
- Material culture of laboratory sciences
- Educational practices in physical sciences, technology, arts and industry
- Problems of representation of experimental practice
- Machine models, instrument collections and technical drawings as means to
communicate practical knowledge
- Instruments and instrument makers: their trade and practices of knowledge
transfer
The position is a two-year Research Fellow (assistant/associate professor
level, depending on qualifications), starting in 01.06.1999. Remuneration is
according to the German academic pay-scale (Bat IIa/Ib), between 2500 and 3500
DM per month (net income, depending on age and marital status), with customary

2 Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science offers two postdoctoral
fellowships as part of the research project and themes described above. The
two posts are one-year postdoctoral fellowships which run from June 1, 1999
through May 31, 2000, and are remunerated at 3400.- DM per month (fellows from
abroad). Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. between September 1, 1994
and May 31, 1999. Woman candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
