Though this is rather stretching the acceptable boundaries of a
Mersenne post, Merry Maisel's note reminded me of a recent comment
from a junior scholar.
I was remonstrating at an unfamiliar, possibly pretentious usage
in a citation - remarking that it is a member of that class of words
that may be said to describe themselves: in this case,
'intended for display'
He responded:
"Epideictic" is a word used in the study of rhetoric.
I've found that my intended audience (English Professors) is
comfortable with the term and even expects it to be used in
many cases.
