This is not particularly my thing, but I thought it might be worth drawing
the list's attention to Item 38 for sale in J & J Lubrano's latest
Catalogue 55 (Winter 1998). I reproduce the entry, as printed, and leave
it to the Lassus experts among you to assess its significance:
38. Lassus, Orlando di 1532-1594. Manuscript discant part book. German.
Late 16th century. Watermark of crown with arch and cross similar to
Heawood 1138. 39 motets by Orlando di Lasso, T.L. de Victoria, J. Wert, J.
Regnart, I. de Vento, A. Utendal, F. Solgrandus (?F. Sorianus) and
anonymous composers. 61 pages on 31 leaves, approximately 15 x 20 cms.
Bound in boards covered with a portion of a liturgical manuscript leaf on
vellum. Of considerable musicological interest is the fact that two of the
six motets by di Lasso found in this manuscript are known only in one or
two other manuscript sources, Im Himmel dort oben ('In Heaven Above', one
tenor part recorded in the Grimma Library) and Geh deinem Weg ('Go Thy
Way', known in two manuscript part books, in Herborn and in the Prussian
State Library in Berlin). Two other di Lasso motets in this collection are
especially charming, numbers XX, Ein gutter Wein ist lobenswert ('Good Wine
is Praiseworthy'), and XXI, So wünsch ich dir eine gutte Nacht ('Thus I
Wish You Good Night'). In three distinct hands. The last two leaves
somewhat browned, but in very good condition overall. Some annotations in
blue crayon. One small worm hole to upper inner corner throughout. A rare
source for the di Lasso motets. $8,500.
