GALPIN SOCIETY CONFERENCE 1999
EDINBURGH, 9-11 JULY, 1999
Call for Papers
The Galpin Society and the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic
Musical Instruments are co-operating in organising a conference on
musical instruments, to be held in Edinburgh, 9-11 July, 1999. The
Galpin Society will be holding its Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh
during the same period; the conference is being organised by Edinburgh
University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments.
The technical sessions will be held in premises of the Faculty of Music
of the University of Edinburgh in the centre of the city. Accommodation
will be available at very reasonable rates in Pollock Halls.
Members are invited to offer a full-length (40-minute) paper or a short
(10-minute) contribution. Papers should be based on original research
and discoveries, and may be on any topic relevant to the study of
musical instruments. It will not be necessary to submit the full text
of papers, but suitable contributions may qualify for publication in the
Galpin Society Journal at the discretion of the editor. The language of
the abstracts and presentations will be English. Papers should be
delivered in person at the Conference by one of the named authors. It
is intended that there will be no parallel sessions.
In addition to the programme of papers, there will be a chance to visit
the Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments, The Edinburgh
University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, and the new
Museum of Scotland.
The organiser, Arnold Myers, requests that abstracts (150 words maximum)
of full-length papers should be sent to him (preferably electronically)
by 15th February, 1999. Acceptance of submissions will be notified by
15th March, 1999. Accepted abstracts will be placed on the Galpin
Society's website. Titles of short contributions should be submitted by
15th April, 1999. A full programme, and information for participants,
will be sent to all members in May, 1999.
Please notify Arnold Myers as soon as possible (preferably by e-mail) if
you expect to attend the Conference - whether or not you intend to give
a paper - to help with planning, and so that you will receive further
information about the meeting.
Information about the Conference will be maintained on the website:
