The Annual General Meeting is to be held in Oxford on Saturday, 7 November
1998, at the Faculty of Music, St Aldate’s, and Christ Church. The
timetable is laid out below.
In addition to the formal meeting there are sessions on two aspects of
early music, Iberian and Welsh, in each case related to a specific source,
involving practical music-making, and offering everyone an opportunity to
join in discussion of the issues. There will also be an opportunity to
look at sources on display in the Upper Library of Christ Church.

Council Meeting
12.30 pm – 1.45 pm
Break for lunch. I am happy to book a table at Ma Belle for lunch (cost
£7.50 for two courses) for any member of Council who would care to join
me. Please let me know by Wednesday, 4 November.
2 pm – 2.25 pm Faculty of Music
Annual General Meeting. This is likely to be brief, since there will be
substantive matters to hold over to an additional meeting early in 1999.
2.30 pm – 3.30 pm Faculty of Music
Robert ap Huw'’s MS of early Welsh music for harp. This early 17th-century
MS whose contents make reference back to at least the 14th century has
fascinated scholars and antiquarians since the 18th century. In the
present century it has attracted the attention of Dolmetsch and Dart.
Substantial new work is now being assembled for a volume on Robert ap Huw
and the MS repertory (Welsh Music History 3, Spring 1999). In a workshop
session William Taylor (who has made a special study of early harp
technique) will demonstrate some of this music, and show how the unique
features of the tablature give precise instructions on the manner of
fingering and playing. Sally Harper will present a paper which proposes
that the MS represents a canon of Welsh music types laid down in the
Statute promulgated at the early sixteenth-century eistoddfodau at
Caerwys, a statute which claimed to have authority from Gruffudd ap Cynan
(d. 1137).
3.30 pm – 4.15 pm Tea and transfer to Christ Church Upper Library
4.15 pm – 5.30 pm Christ Church Upper Library
Victoria’s Motecta … festorum totius anni (1585) and current issues
relating to the performance of sixteenth-century chant and polyphony. Owen
Rees will introduce the Victoria choirbook now housed in the library, and
singers will perform from the book itself. Other sources will also be on
display, including the library’s copies of the Sarum Antiphoner and
Gradual. The workshop performance will be followed by an informal open
discussion on issues relating to the performance of sixteenth-century
chant and polyphony, including contributions from Owen Rees, Andrew
Carwood, and David Skinner with reference to projects in hand, and to the
new course in early music singing being offered as an option in the
Faculty of Music.
6.05 pm – 7.00 pm Christ Church Cathedral
Evensong sung by the Cathedral Choir. Stephen Darlington has selected
music specifically to mark the visit of the PMMS. The service will include
motets suitable for the octave of All Saints by Tallis and Byrd.
