OPENING OF 'ZARLINO' SITE, A CAPPELLA TUNING IN THE RENAISSANCE
----------------------------------------------------------------

Whereas the numerous and various temperaments used throughout the
recent history of western music to tune keyboard instruments are well
known nowadays, the intonation of singers remains a field which has
been investigated very little so far. The site which has just opened
at :

http://www.home.ch/~spaw2928/zarlino/ (European original site)
http://www.medieval.org/emfaq/zarlino/ (American mirror)

casts new light over the matter.

Zarlino, it's :

A software
----------

Distributed free with its source code, Zarlino software (Win 95) is a
basic MIDI sequencer with the following features :

- its 'mother tongue' is not the equal temperament, but the
pythagorean tuning.

- each note can be distinctively corrected with one or several
syntonic commas in order to produce pure chords.

- the musical notation used, a very simple tablature, is compatible
with the HTML format.

A theoretical and historical essay
----------------------------------

On the basis of Gioseffo Zarlino's written works, we are outlining a
functional theoretical model which should allow to put rationally into
practise the principle of just intonation which had been set out,
although very imprecisely, as early as the Renaissance.

A small syntonic concert
------------------------

An anthologie of vocal pieces from the Renaissance carried out with
the Zarlino software in accordance with the model presented in the
essay.

We are looking forward to your visit and thank you for your interest.

OUVERTURE DU SITE "ZARLINO", JUSTESSE A CAPPELLA A LA RENAISSANCE.
------------------------------------------------------------------
