To colleagues interested in the Radio Research Project

(some may get this message twice. Apologies for that: I am trying to
reach those who returned page 3 (and ticked research )of the orange
flyer announcing this project, as well as those who were circulated
about the ESRC Lincoln seminar last February. And among you, those
who do not follow the e-mail discussion group radio-studies - more on
how to join this below)

The Radio Research Project (RRP), with the support of the Radio
Academy, is organising an event at Sheffield on Fri and Sat December
11 and 12, with the AMCCS (Association for Media Communication and
Cultural Studies) who have kindly agreed to share their venue and
programme for the purpose.

Our purpose is to translate the RRP into something permanent,
provisionally entitled Radio & Education Research Network, which the
Radio Academy has offered to incorporate as a membership category
within the Academy. This offer, and a proposed consitution will be
considered on the Saturday. Prior to that on the Friday there will
be space for papers in a radio strand of seminars in the main AMCCS
conference.

I paste below what I posted on radio-studies the other day. There is
still time to reach the AMCCS organisers with paper proposals - see
their addresses at the end.

There has been a ferment of activity on radio-studies discussing
this opportunity.

If you want to join the list send an e-mail to

URGENT! CALL FOR PAPERS! URGENT!

RERN info No.1 27.9.98

Friday and Saturday, December 11 & 12, in Sheffield,
will see the launch of the Radio Research and Education
Network (RERN), successor to the Radio Research
Project (RRP) (for background, see my 10 July
radio-studies message).

We are joining the Association for Media Communication
and Cultural Studies (AMCCS) for their annual conference.
The idea is: it's short notice and they were already up and
running, so we are coming in alongside their arrangements.
Also their constituency is likely to include a number of
people interested in our specialism. The programme
will include, on the Friday, as strong a strand of
radio papers as we radio-studies listers (and Lincoln ESRC
participants) can muster. There'll be a sesssion at
the end of Friday to explain what the RRP has done and
what RERN hopes to do, then a reception. On Saturday,
while the AMCCS get on with their conference, we will
get down to the business of approving a constitution, electing
a committee etc. Anyone who turns up for this part will
get approx 50 pounds rebate (courtesy of the Radio Academy)
on their AMCCS conference fee (about 130 pounds
covering all meals and overnight stay)..
(Of course there'll be day only and student rates as well).

More about this in another message soon, and in flyers that the
AMCCS and the RRP will produce (the latter will go out to
all those on the orange flyer database' acknowledging, at last,
the return of the page 3 details).

THE URGENT THING TO ANNOUNCE NOW, listers,
is to say that we've got a bare week, till Oct 3, to reach
the AMCCS organisers with 200-word abstracts for papers.
They are keen to run a radio strand, and so far have two
offerings - from Gail Phillips, Murdoch University, Australia,
on aboriginal radio, and Hugh Chignell, Bournemouth, on
radio documentary archives (are you there, Hugh? Sounds
good). Our very own Eryl Price-Davies is interested in
running a session on teaching aspects. How about picking
up on some of those earlier exchanges on assessment, editing,
RSLs or hearing from broadcasters who have recently come
in to teaching? Plus - Eryl will want to ask - could we get
some preliminary findings of the breakfast show survey to
report? (I'm offering too, Eryl).

Send (as well as posting them here) your abstracts to
AMCCS conference organisers Maggie Wykes
and/or Yvonne Tasker - addresses -

They are also the people to contact for conference
information - MAKE A DIARY NOTE: Fri &
Sat, 11 & 12 December 1998, Sheffield. DON'T
MISS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE A SAY IN
WHERE WE TAKE THIS INITIATIVE!
