Dear Quentin,
I too have an interest in environmental representation - though confined
to news for the most part. The only advertisement that comes to mind is
J.Burgess's discussion of a nuclear power station and its press
advertisements picturing a nuclear power station situated in something of
a rural idyll. When I taught a course on introductory sociology a few
years ago I used a random selection of TV ads and discovered that they
visualised and gave expression to a strong gemienschaft/gessellschaft
oppositons with many indulging rural/urban, nature/society,
community/alienation themes. I'd be interested to find out whether a more
explicit environmental sensibility has been co-opted by more recent TV
advertisments.
All good luck with your course.
Simon Cottle.
