Globalization, Employment and the Workplace: Responses for the Millennium
14th Annual Employment Research Unit Conference
Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, Wales
September 8th & 9th 1999
The increasing globalization of economic, social, political and cultural
processes has important implications for the organization of work,
employment, labour markets and employee/industrial relations. The
globalizing trend means the workplace of the twenty-first century will
continue to witness the impact of the world economic restructuring. The
trend towards global integration of production and circulation of finance
capital will have enormous impacts on the workplace and as a result the
way human resources are managed. For instance, the current state of
economic interdependence means that an economic recession in one part of
the world quickly impacts on jobs/employment and employment practices in
other parts of the world.
This is because in an internationalized economy - a borderless world -
the
role of nation-states as organizing units for organizations has changed.
In recent years, Transnational Corporations (TNCs) are increasingly
making
conscious efforts to design their production and distribution systems in
order to meet the demands and changes in the global economy. Even
organizations that operate solely in domestic economies are also
responding to the competitive pressures arising from globalization.
Thus,
both the external and internal environments of organizations are
constantly changing. Needless to say, these changes in the
organizational
environment pose challenges to human resource management in
organizations.
The 14th Annual Employment Research Unit Conference will explore the
impact of globalization on work and employment in contemporary
organizations. Broadly, it will explore the HRM implications of
organizational responses to globalization. Within this broad theme we
are
inviting papers on the following:
(i) Globalization, competitiveness and the management of human resources
(ii) The impact of organizational strategies and international production
on the workplace (iii) Globalization and the organization of labour
markets (iv) Globalization and Human Resource Development (v)
Globalization and cultural change in organizations (vi) Trade Union
responses to Globalization (vii) Globalization, transnational
corporations, Employment and the Workplace.
We would encourage contributors to offer papers dealing with theoretical,
methodological, empirical and comparative issues relating to the
conference theme.
In addition, we would encourage contributions from researchers from every
corner of the world. Papers on globalization and employment issues in
transition/emerging economies, newly industrialising economies and
developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America would be
particularly welcomed.
