"People Working Together in Virtual Environments"
Prof. Mel Slater
6.30 pm Wed 25 November 1998
Room A529, City University, St John St, London EC1
Organised by the ACM British Chapter
This talk will begin with a general introduction to Virtual
Environments. It will then discuss recent experimental work
comparing what happens when people work together on a task
in a virtual environment with performing the same task in
ordinary reality, focusing mainly on the unfolding social
dynamics. Who emerged as leader? Was there any association
between computational power and leadership? To what extent
do social discomforts such as embarrassment or shyness
emerge in virtual environment encounters? How do people
respond to their own and other people's `virtual bodies'?
Such questions are important if virtual reality is to be
seriously used as a means for social and work encounters.
Mel Slater is Professor of Virtual Environments at University
College London, where he leads ten other researchers in the
Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics Group. He has been
a Visiting Professor at the University of California (1991-92)
and a Visiting Scientist at MIT (1998). He is particularly
interested in real-time algorithms for photo-realistic display,
in what happens when people go into virtual environments, in
what determines their sense of presence, and in how people
cooperate. He leads a project on Virtual Rehearsal for Actors
funded by the Virtual Centre of Excellence on Digital Broadcast
(DigitalVCE Ltd) and is a Principal Investigator on an EU ACTS
project on Collaborative Virtual Environments.
Refreshments will be provided. Everyone welcome.
FEES: Chapter members; host institution staff and students: Free
BCS and ACM members; other students (ID required) 3.00
