The acronym ENSAE stands for Ecole nationale de la statistique et de
l'administration économique (see WWW.ensae.fr), which trains
statisticians, especially for the INSEE. Inside the ENSAE you find a
research centre, the CREST, Centre de Recherche en économie et
statistique, inside the CREST the LSQ, Laboratoire de sociologie
quantitative, and inside the LSQ you find me (for two years ; I am
tenured as a professor of sociology at the University of Versailles).
I have written a book about administrative and clerical workers
('Les employés', Paris, La Découverte, 1994) and several papers about
occupational mobility in France (one is forthcoming in the next issue of
Economie et statistique, dec. 98).These papers were based on the EDP,
Echantillon démographique permanent, which is the French cousin of the LS.
I read 'The ONS LS Update' faithfully (the paper on suicide in the last
issue was very interesting).
I am intending to develop a comparative (UK and France) project about
women's careers and career interactions inside of couples (on the moment,
mainly on the basis of the survey 'Jeunes et carrières', a 1997 supplement
to the annual Enquête Emploi, by the INSEE).
When my project is more defined, I'll be interested in getting in touch
with Heather Joshi and other British researchers working in that field.
I apologize for my awkward English. Thanks for welcoming me on the list.
Alain Chenu
