As one who was on the Canon1024 list and cancelled, I have a few other
comments which may be "helpful" to those considering the list - and should
be considered if we truly are (as we often claim) sensitive and respectful
of the religious beliefs/practices/disciplines of each other.
First, Canon 1024 prohits the ordination of women in the Catholic Church.
This is a Catholic issue which is officially closed by the only authority
in the Catholic Church which has the ability to decide to ordain women. It
is therefore pompous, egocentric, and radically disrespectful for any of us
who are not Catholic to presume to preach to the Catholic Church (or any
other religious body) on a subject which does not affect us, and is an
important doctrinal point in that religion. Unless, of course, we consider
ourselves some sort of intellectual vigilantes riding herd on every
religion with which we disagree.
Second, when I was a member of the group, there were certianly
less-than-theological/charitable attitudes and responses. Intense
badgering of the group members who presumed to defend Canon 1024 was
commonplace. If you want a group in which a particular viewpoint is
enshrined, this is the place.
Third, I'm not sure how they will present a "balanced" sheet of pros and
cons, since this list is not only extremely pro, but has virtually no
members who are con (at least in my experience).
Finally, I would ask the question: If this liturgy group became/was
overwhelmingly dedicated to promoting the Liturgy of John Chrysostom, to
the exclusion of all other rites, with the attitude that only that liturgy
was morally or doctrinally correct, most of us would abandon the list. As
one who has been involved in a number of religious forms and philisophical
expressions, I found the Canon 1024 list's similar approach on women's
ordination to be equally offensive.
John's experience may be different, and as he is still a member, I would
defer to his more up-to-date opinion.
That's my $.02 on the subject =8-)
In nomine Domine
