As a totally compulsive url collector with 30,000+ bookmarks
(all neatly organized in the right folders but not at all verified!),
I've tried many different procedures of organization, and now rely
a lot on Compass for my bookmark organization:
http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/way/5500/compass.html
though I save bookmarks into a bookmark file I call new.htm
and then later transfer them to appropriate files via Compass.

To make new bookmark files in Netscape, I suggest opening
your bookmark file and saving it under a different name (.htm)
Then open the new bookmark file, delete all the ones you
don't want there, and leave the ones you want to keep in
that file.

Another system I've used and recommend for people with
a lot (THOUSANDS) of bookmarks:
Create an all-purpose bookmark file with folders in all the major
categories you use....Let's say there's 15. Save it 15 times
under the 15 different names of your folders. Open each
of the 15 bookmark files and delete all but the ones that
pertain to that subject. Now, when you surf the web, keep
your all-purpose bookmark file open, and add bookmarks to
the appropriate folder....Every few weeks, transfer bookmarks
in those folders to the appropriate bookmark file by importing
the whole file to the other bookmark file and deleting all but
those you want to keep there.

Not a highly efficient method...I agree, but the best I've found.
Am certainly open to better suggestions.

(I also suggest keeping one folder called PRIORITY with the 30
or so urls you use most frequently, and keeping a copy of it in
all your bookmark folders).

Netscape is not ideal for bookmark management, and Communicator
is worse than 3.0 because it doesn't alphabetize......which is why
I now use Compass (which easily imports and exports individuals
folders and bookmarks, and interfaces easily with Netscape),
though I still work out of an all-purpose bookmark file in Netscape.

If you're asking about how to copy bookmark files to
text files or html pages...that's another issue involving
getting rid of extraneous html while saving both the name
and url. For such purposes, try any of these:
SHOW URL http://www.faico.net/showurl/index.html
HTML STRIP
<http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/2414/>http://www.geocities.com
/SiliconValley/Lakes/2414/
(I've only tried the first two, and they both work)
BOOKLOCK http://www.gttech.com/booklock.htm
URL MANAGER http://www.dlcwest.com/~sorev/url.htm

A great source of reviews, info about bookmark
manager is Dave Central: http://www.davecentral.com
Also: http://tucows.kilroys.net/bookmark95.html

I'll be writing a long article at some point on the subject...have
a lot of material I've saved and have tested many bookmark
methods and programs.. but this should be enough for now!
Got to go organize my urls...<grin>
