The MIDAS Open Forum will include short sessions on COPAC and JSTOR in
the morning and a two hour session (Session III) in the afternoon on all
the MIDAS Bibliographic Services.
JSTOR: A Unique Digital Archive Collection (Daniel Holden)
JSTOR is an important new Bibliographic service at MIDAS which currently provides access
to more than two million pages from 47 research journal in 11 subject fields reaching back
to 1884. This presentation will introduce the service and include an on-line
demonstration.
COPAC is a national Online Public Access Catalogue, providing unified access to the online
catalogues of some of the largest university research libraries in the UK and Ireland. The
current project is funded until 1998. This presentation will outline plans for the future
of COPAC as a service and likely developments over the coming years.
The afternoon session on Bibliographic Services will provide an opportunity
to learn more about the various bibliographic services and projects based at
MIDAS/Manchester Computing. There will be a structured walkthrough of the
JSTOR system highlighting key features of the service. There will be a
presentation on the Nature digitisation project. This project, which is a collaboration
between the Higher Education Digitisation Service (HEDS), MIDAS and Macmillan, is to
develop a prototype digital archive of the journal Nature (1869-1992). There will a
presentation on the National Electronic Site Licence Initiative (NESLI) and its supporting
website. For COPAC, the main features of the new web interface will be introduced. For all
the services/projects there will be an opportunity for 'hands-on' sessions.
The two other afternoon sessions focus on the Beilstein CrossFire system
(Session I) and Census and Spatial data (Session II).
Academic, library, IT support staff and research students from Higher
Education Institutions are welcome to attend the morning and/or an afternoon
