There are still a few places left on the following Netskills workshop:
Netskills Workshop:
Communication and Collaboration on the Internet
9:30 - 4:30 Thursday 17th December 1998 Newcastle University
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Workshop Description
The Internet offers new and unrivalled opportunities to communicate
and collaborate across the campus or around the world. Distributed
work groups involving meetings, discussion groups, shared documents
and shared applications can be provided over the Internet. Many of
these facilities use existing tools including the World Wide Web
and email, others use new technology, for example videoconferencing
and Internet telephony. Some services also provide interfaces to more
traditional communication media such as the fax and telephone.
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who
want to understand more about how the Internet and intranets are
employed to provide interactive communication and collaborative
environments. It provides hands-on examples demonstrating the speed,
convenience, low cost and sophisticated features of individual and
group communication systems.
It is suitable for researchers and academics from any discipline,
librarians and computing service staff.
Topics covered include:
* an introduction to videoconferencing and Internet telephony
* use of Web-based collaborative environments
* interfacing to other technology including mobile phones and fax
* discussion facilities including chat systems, email and
Usenet News hypernews and hypermail
* virtual environments such as MUDs and MOOs
* document, file- and application-sharing systems
* an introduction to secure communication through encryption
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
* seen examples of how the Internet is being used for
communication and collaborative purposes
* explored Web-based discussion and collaborative environments
* an awareness of videoconferencing and Internet telephony
* seen document and application sharing systems in action
* explored virtual collaborative environments
* had the opportunity to discuss the issues involved in
Internet-based communication
* investigated hypernews, hypermail and chat facilities
* seen or tried Web-to-fax and Web-to-mobile phone messaging
services
Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills and no prior
knowledge of the Internet; however, basic computer skills
such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential. In addition,
experience of using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving
files and opening and closing applications (e.g. a word processor)
would be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher
and further education. Other participants should contact Netskills
for the relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
