Data Protection Act 1998 -
Implications for Higher and Further Education Institutions
A one-day conference
The Rutherford Conference Centre, Institute of Physics,
76 Portland Place, London W1N 4AA
Friday 4 December 1998
The Data Protection Act 1998, which implements the EU Data Protection Directive, received Royal Assent in July. The new law increases the legal obligations of universities and colleges and extends the legal rights of staff and students. Some aspects of the law will remain similar, but the Act will introduce highly significant extensions to the scope of the law, including manual records that are part of a `filing system'. A further extension is that data protection principles will apply even to those not required to register under the Act.
Higher and further educational establishments cannot afford to delay considering how they will implement the new law. This national one day conference aims to inform participants about the legal changes and will provide an opportunity to review the task ahead and start drawing up plans. The conference will be of interest to Administrators, Academic Registrars, Personnel Officers, Admissions Officers and any other personnel who are dealing with their Institutions’ records.
