Thank you for asking about `no answer came the stern reply'. I think we
have alluded to this on the programme at some time and I included a brief
mention in my books PHRASES & SAYINGS (Bloomsbury) and AS WE SAY IN OUR
HOUSE (Robson) as well as in the NEWSLETTER. I have come to the conclusion
that it is NOT a quotation but just a popular catchphrase, known since the
1930s at least. I should love to know if any of your librarian colleagues
ever find out more.
