INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE
ANIMAL (SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES) ACT
The Institute of Information Scientists, Northern Branch, is holding
a meeting on the above topic
on 17th March 1999, 1.30pm - 4.30pm
at UMIST, Manchester
cost £40.00 for IIS members (including VAT); £50.00 for nonmembers
(including VAT)
A revision to the text of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, which
came into effect in September 1998, makes clear the requirement that
a project licence applicant must be aware of the possibilities of
implementing any of the Three Rs (refinement, reduction and
replacement of animal use) within the proposed study. One of the ways
in which this awareness may be demonstrated is by documenting the
literature searches which have been conducted in the course of
planning the study. However, it is not always easy to retrieve
information on the Three Rs. This workshop will examine some possible
approaches to solving the problem. It should be of interest to
project licence applicants and other scientists using laboratory
animals, as well as to library and information specialists in
Academia and Industry.
The Programme:
13.30 Registration
14.00 Introduction: Krys Bottrill, FRAME
14.05 A Home Office Inspector will discuss the expectations
of the Home Office
14.40 Tea break
15.00 John Burr, Chief Librarian, Sanofi, will outline
strategies for use in searches of on-line data bases for this
specialised topic.
15.45 Krys Bottrill, FRAME, will describe some specialised
Internet resources which may be useful in the search for
information on the Three Rs.
