At Reading University Library we are currently reviewing
the way we store Multimedia material and would be
interested to find out what other libraries are doing.
1. How does your library store Multimedia material (in
particular vidoes and CD's)? For example is the material on
closed access, box on shelf but item behind desk, or on
open access.
The box is on shelf and the item stored behind the counter.
2. Do you feel that the current arrangement works well for
your library?
3. If your Multimedia material is on open access, what sort
of security do you have in place? In particular here we
are interested in names of suppliers of security boxes etc.
Please reply directly to me and I shall summarise for the
list.
Many thanks for your time.

Hello Neil,
I read your email about the storage of audio
material with interest. At LGU, we have recently made our
audio cassettes and CDs open access. We have the CDs and
audio cassettes stored in security cases supplied by a
company called Pro Loc. The cases are already tattled, and
completely enclose the CD or audio cassette, making it
virtually impossible to pry them open.
ProLoc provide security cases for CD, audio and
videocassettes, including double sets.
I have found ProLoc to be very helpful. If you
request it, they will visit your site and give your staff a
free demonstration of the security cases. They will also
advise you on where best to place the releaser needed to
open the security cases, and if necessary will make
modifications to your existing equipment.
The address is:

The CD and Audio Collection is kept separately from the
bookstock in their own display browsers, which Gresswells
supply. This allows the collection to be easily browsed by
students and staff. The CD or audiocassette has to be
discharged from the security case and issued whether
intended for use in the library or for borrowing.
We have found that interest in and use of the collection
has at least tripled!
With our videos, which is a large collection, they are
stored separately from the books on shelves located near
viewing machines. Videos are completely open access, and
are not placed in security cases at all. Students and staff
can view them without having them issued.
You are welcome to visit the ILRC and view our media
collections.
I hope this has been useful.
