Dear All!
Did I get replies and advice - so many kind & knowledgable people on
this List!
Most referred me to either the Office of National Statistics (sounds
American doesn't it?) or Reward Regional Surveys, but I went onto the
net for the government stats (http://www.ons.gov.uk/data.htm) and found
that search most rewarding. I see that boundaries are again changing in
the UK but basically SE and SW are still the same!
I couldn't believe the way the pound has changed in purchasing power; in
1974 the average weekly pay was about L20/wk, in 1996 it was about
L315/wk !! (Do the Stats people take in CEOs salaries when these
figures are compiled? Does a bus driver earn as much as L300 a week?)
Least Expensive Housing:
Wales 1996 av. house price <L56K
Eastern 1996...............<L60K
SW 1996....................>L68K
On the face of it if my subject was to retire in UK he should go to
Wales, definitely not the South or South-West!
What I couldn't see was a comparison of Incomes for Pensioners in the
Regions, whereas disposable income for wage earners is given over the
past 20 odd years or so.
By the way, has anyone bought a SAAB in the last year or so?
We have a 1997 SAAB 900 SE fully loaded for which we paid $31K
equivalent ($2.40/Lsterling) to L12,916; according to Times &
Independent on Sunday advertisements last month that same car in UK
costs L29K to L31K which is at least $69,600 !!!
If anyone wants to come to Sunny Ontario maybe I can help ?? And I
thought life was becoming expensive over here - it's only taxes
maybe!!!!
Anyway, thanks again - a very useful exercise at least,
Sincere greetings to all,
Alec
