The results of postgraduate placement survey are summarised below:
1. Has the number of applicants changed from last year? If so, by how
many?
The overwhelming response to this was that the numbers had reduced.
Two-thirds of the institutions who responded had had 50% fewer
applicants this year compared to last year. Several people said that the
quality of applicants was good.
2. Where are the post advertised?
All but one institution advertised in the LA directory. Alternative
places were University careers bulletins and local employment agency
(one site)
3. Where are you located?
Respondents came from the Thames Valley, North West England and South
West England.
4. What is the salary?
The salary on offer varied from 8,000 to 11,400 pounds.
The biggest drop in applicants came from the Thames Valley area (e.g.
Reading, Oxford and Swindon) and London. The salary didn't seem to make
any difference as this geographic area included the largest and smallest
salaries on offer.
Many thanks again to all the respondents. It was comforting to know that
the drop in applications wasn't just limited to our organisation.
