Hello everyone
I am doing a project on libraries, past and present, that have
excessively grandiose names, in some cases misleading potential users
into believing that the library in question is the best source to use,
although another library with a less grandiose name might be more
appropriate.
A couple of examples have been suggested to me so far. The first was
the library of the Institute of Geological Sciences in South
Kensington in the 1970s which was named the National Reference Library
of Geology, even though the earth science collections of the Science
Reference Library were more comprehensive. The second is the Scottish
Science Library, part of the National Library of Scotland, which does
not have such extensive collections (apart from British material) as
those of the larger Scottish universities.
If anyone can comment on either of the above examples, or offer other
suggestions, I would be very grateful to hear from them.
Sue Armstrong
