ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN
Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Librarian in the
Templeman Library to work on the Victorian and Edwardian Popular Theatre
Collection. The post is for a fixed term of ten months starting as soon as

The material which makes up the Collection includes:
· the Melville Collection of theatre records, playscripts, prints,
photographs and other memorabilia
· the Pettingell Collection of nineteenth century play scripts and
prompt copies
· a collection of pantomime libretti, playbills, programmes and
cuttings
· the Reading Rayner Collection of theatrical biography and the
history of the stage
· playbills and programmes acquired to supplement the collections.
Substantial parts of the Collections have been catalogued under the
Funding Councils' programme for Non-Formula Funding of Specialised
Research Collections in the Humanities. This post will continue this work.
The principal duties of the post will be:
(a) the creation of on-line records and the transfer of manual records
to on-line form for books, manuscripts, images and ephemera
(b) the preparation of an on-line subject index
(c) support and liaison with researchers and students using the
collection
(d) liaising with external collections and specialists
The postholder will also fulfil the following duties as required:
(e) advising on the storage, conservation and display of the
collection and implementing agreed solutions
(f) collection development in liaison with the Special Collections
Librarian
(g) supervision of library assistants allocated to work on the
collection
(h) participation in Library-wide projects and planning.
This outline is for guidance and the range of duties may be amended or
augmented at any time by the Librarian.
The following are essential
· a good honours degree and professional qualifications in
library/information science
· knowledge or experience of on-line cataloguing and indexing
· knowledge or experience of collection management
· knowledge and experience of current conservation practices
· good interpersonal skills
· good supervisory skills
· ability to work alone or in a team
· ability to meet deadlines
· keyboarding skills.
It is desirable that candidates should have experience of working in
academic libraries and possess a knowledge of theatre history especially
British.
The postholder will be a member of the Information Services Division and
will report to the Special Collections Librarian.
The University has adopted a policy of making most jobs available for job

Job sharers share the salary and holidays of a full-time post on a
pro-rata basis. Working arrangements will be as agreed between the Head
of Section and the job-sharing team.
Appointment will be made according to qualifications and experience to a
point of the Administrative, Library and Computing Staff Scale 1/2,
currently £15,159 - £22,785.
Should changed circumstances in the Library or the University make it
necessary, the University reserves the right to redeploy the postholder to
another post of commensurate duties and responsibilities.
