THE POTSDAM INSTITUTE OF PHARMACOEPIDEMIOLOGY
AND TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT

The Potsdam Institute of Pharmacoepidemiology and Technology Assessment
is a free standing Institute of the Association for Pharmacoepidemiology
Berlin. It is located near Berlin (Potsdam Babelsberg) and easily
accessible by public transport for those living in Berlin. The main
purpose of the institute is the development of three bridge disciplines,
epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and technology assessment, in
cooperation with scientists from Germany and Europe. The institute is
academically cooperating with the McGill University in Montrial, Canada
and the Free University Berlin, Germany. The methodological and applied
research projects conducted by the Institute use the experience and
expertise gained by McGill University in its Collaborative Program of
Pharmacoepidemiology.

EPIDEMIOLOGY: PRINCIPLES AND METHODS
October 05 - October 09, 1998

Course Instructor: Prof. Jean-Francois Boivin,
     McGill University, Montrial
Guest lecturers: Prof. Lothar Heinemann, ZEG Berlin;
Dr. Edeltraut Garbe, Potsdam Institute, APhE e.V.

This one-week course provides an introduction to the principles and
methods of epidemiology. Students will be familiarized with measures of
disease frequency, descriptive studies, cohort studies, case-control
studies, and intervention studies. Bias and confounding will be addressed.
Implications for the evaluation of the published scientific literature
will be described, and the use of meta-analysis will be illustrated.
Special applications of epidemiology to various domains such as public
health and health policy analysis (including economic aspects)
will be presented. The course will be based on lectures, exercises,
discussions, and assigned readings. Several published s studies will be
used to illustrate key concepts. Examples will be drawn from a broad
variety of fields, including etiologic research, pharmaco-
epidemiology, health technology assessment, and outcomes research.

Course material will be distributed in advance to early registrants to
allow preparatory readings.
The language of instruction will be English. Students should therefore
have a good working knowledge of English. Other special knowledge will not
be required as it is an introductory course in epidemiology.

Jean-Francois Boivin is professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at
McGill University, Montrial, Canada. He is a physician (Laval Univer-sity,
1973), a specialist in public health (Montrial University, 1990), and he
holds a doctoral degree in epidemiology (Harvard University, 1981). Doctor
Boivin has published in the fields of cancer epidemiology,
pharmacoepidemiology, the epidemiology of AIDS, and health technology
assessment; he has also coauthored papers on me-thodologic topics in
epidemiology, including confounding, the case-cohort design,
case-control-studies, and the two-stage sampling design. In 1997, he
received the Award for Teaching Excellence from the Epidemiology and
Biostatistics students of McGill University.
