just to add a little to the debate
the two cases of plagiarism I have been asked to investigate have
been by students who have not not only copied verbatim the
original piece but, have scanned or photocopied the original works
and presented the scanned work as their own; they have not even
taken the time to re-write the original!
In one case the student had not submitted the work, he had given it
to a lecturer to 'go over' before final submission. The student was
then given the chance to retract his work. Did he? I think that you
know the answer.
The debate should be opened:
should currant students be allowed to see past work?
who should be protecting the intellectual property of previous
students; librarians?
how can intellectual property be protected sufficiently?
thanks
