Applications are invited for the post of Resource Officer responsible for
the day to day running of the International Child Health Resource Centre,
which is located within the Institute Library.
The Library at the Institute of Child Health is a merging institution with
Library Services at University College London.
Candidates should have experience of library/information work, good
interpersonal skills, and familiarity with word processing. Experience of
working in less developed countries, of work in a health-related subject, or
of automated library systems, would be advantageous.
Salary will be in the range 13,015 pounds stlg - 16,714 pounds stlg
including London weighting. It is expected that an initial appointment will
be made towards the lower end of the scale.

Job Summary
The Resource Officer will be responsible for the day to day running of the
Resource Centre which is located within the Institute Library. The Resource
Centre supports the work of the Centre for International Child Health
(CICH), one of the Units within the Population Health Sciences Theme. CICH
runs MSc courses in Maternal-Child Health and Disability, together with
short courses in related subjects; there is an emphasis on less developed
countries. The unique nature of this collection of specialist material,
which is not easily available elsewhere, attracts a large number of visitors
during the year both from the UK and overseas.
The postholder will be expected to maintain close links with staff in CICH
in maintaining and developing the collection. S/he will be a member of the
Library/Resource Centre staff and will be accountable on a day to day basis
to the Librarian, ICH.
The post is full-time, and it is expected that an initial appointment will
be made towards the lower end of the salary scales quoted. Informal

The Library/Resource Centre
The Friends of the Children of Great Ormond Street Library/Resource Centre
The Library supports the research, teaching and clinical commitments of the
Institute of Child Health (ICH) and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for
Children. The collection incorporates the CICH Resource Centre, with
particular emphasis on less developed countries, and the extensive range of
materials available from Teaching Aids at Low Cost (TALC). Approximately
16,000 volumes are stocked, and over 200 current journals are received.
The Library/Resource Centre was refurbished and redeveloped in 1996.
Networked PC workstations give access to a wide range of databases and
Internet resources. During 1998 the Library’s Web catalogue, based on the
“Unicorn” system, was launched (see
http://ion.ucl.ac.uk/~admin/webcat.html). Online book issuing has just been
introduced.
The Library is one of the site libraries within University College London.
Duties and Responsibilities
· to be responsible for the day to day running of the Resource Centre
· to help develop and maintain the collection, working with CICH and library
staff
· to maintain links with related collections and organisations (eg: London
School of Hygiene, Health-Link (AHRTAG), Child to Child)
· to attend meetings of the Resource Centre Group, the weekly CICH Staff
Meetings, and Teaching Meetings as appropriate to the Resource Centre
· to help promote use of the Resource Centre by members of ICH and external
visitors
· to assist those using the Resource Centre
· to arrange visits for groups of students and others
· to be part of the library team providing services to all visitors to the
Library/Resource Centre (including helping staff the issue desk, dealing
with enquiries and referring on to senior members of staff as appropriate,
shelving and shelf tidying)
· to work flexible working hours as agreed by the Librarian, ICH. Currently
the Library is staffed from 9am to 6pm Mondays to Fridays.
· to undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the
Librarian, ICH
