New Versions of BIDS Web Interfaces Released
============================================
Following on from the success of the enhanced ISI Web interface that was
released in May we have now developed and released enhanced versions of
the IBSS, Compendex and RSC services. The new releases provide improved
functionality, especially in the area of tagging marked articles, and
improved screen layout. Previously the five bibliographic datasets from
the Royal Society of Chemistry were only available via the telnet
interface. Access to the RSC Web interface is via the url:
http://www.bids.ac.uk/RSC
To use the enhanced Web interfaces, users will need a browser which can
handle Frames and JavaScript. Netscape versions 3 & 4, and
Internet Explorer 4 can all do this. The 'basic' versions of the ISI,
IBSS and Compendex services are still available for earlier versions of
browsers.
Details of the most recent changes to the RSC, Compendex and IBSS
services are in http://www.bids.ac.uk/news/newweb.html
BIDS AUTUMN WORKSHOPS 1998
==========================
BIDS will once again be running a series of workshops around the UK this
Autumn. These workshops are designed for those who give support to BIDS
users, whether from computing services or central library services or
departmental libraries.
A number of new developments and services have been introduce recently or
are planned for introduction over the next few months (including a
simplified login process for all services, and the new INSPEC service),
and this will be an opportunity for supporters to familiarise themselves
with them, and to offer comment and feedback. The issue of the move of
the "privatisation" of BIDS will also be covered, including the
implications for future JICS-supported and other services.
Although these workshops are intended primarily to cover the BIDS service,
in the case of the London and Manchester workshops, we will be inviting a
representative of the MIDAS service to give you a brief overview of
developments taking place with their service. Similarly, at the Glasgow
event, we will be inviting EDINA to give a short presentation.
Attendance at these workshops will be free to BIDS subscribers and
refreshments and a light lunch will be provided. The format will be
broadly similar to earlier BIDS events; registration and coffee at
10:00am, a presentation/demonstration starting at 10:30am, lunch,
afternoon "hands-on" session, closing question-and-answer session with a
finish no later than 3:30pm.
The following are the dates and venues:
Date Venue

Tuesday 8th September King's College, London
Wednesday 9th September Manchester University

this reason we reserve the right to restrict the numbers.

form. Also, if you book and then discover that you will be unable to
attend, *please* let us know before the event so we may offer your place
to someone else.
Complete the attached Booking Form as soon as possible and either e-mail

We will e-mail a booking confirmation, and if you give us a postal
