Apologies if you receive this twice.
Here are the results from the recent survey regarding FE college library
summer opening hours. This is a very brief summary - if anyone would like
more information, please email me - I will be happy to send a copy of the
replies. I am on holiday for two weeks, commencing 3rd August, so any
requests received after Friday 31st July may take a while.
The survey seems to indicate that most libraries are staying open during
the summer break, and there does not appear to be any correlation between
size or the level of courses (most institutions are offering HND and
higher anyway); however I would emphasise that my analysis is not
detailed!
A total of 23 replies were received.
1. The size of institution ranged from 1000 to 22000 students. The average
size was 5195.
2. 21 of the 23 institutions ran courses at HND level or above, although
some of these only ran one or two at this level.
3. 17 of the 23 opened throughout the summer. Of these, those with more
than one site generally only had one site open throughout the summer, with
other sites either remaining closed, or only open for one day per week (or
by prior arrangement). One college rotated the site which was open
throughout the break.
3 of the 23 colleges closed for part of the summer, for 2 or 3 weeks.
3 of the 23 colleges stayed closed for the whole summer (lucky things !)
4. Opening hours:
Term time: The latest time any college was open until was 9 pm during
term time.
9 colleges opened for all or part of Saturday, and one college was open on
Sunday.
14 colleges did not open at the weekend at all during term time, although
several had plans to do so.
Vacation time: The latest time any college was open until was 5 pm. 2
Colleges shut for the afternoon, and one closed at 3.30 pm.
No colleges opened on Saturday during the vacation.
5. Book issues over summer:
20 colleges issued books over the summer; 3 colleges only issued books to
students/classes with tutor permission.
3 colleges did not issue books over the summer at all.
6. Comments:
If anyone is interested in the comments, please email me.
Many thanks,
Phil
