====================================== Information about NISS Services ==
** Training/awareness material
---------------------------
If you would like to obtain PowerPoint slides or worksheets about NISS for
use in training or awareness sessions at your site, then have a look at our
page at http://www.niss.ac.uk/niss/aware/ to see whether the material
available there might fit the bill.
This "NISS Awareness Resources" page can be found in the "About NISS"
section of our website, and was derived originally from the collection of
materials NISS staff used when giving presentations or training sessions at
education sites around the UK. The documents and slides have recently been
checked and updated where necessary, and annotated with a descriptive
sentence or two as an aid to selection. The files can be downloaded for
local use, and could form the basis for group training sessions or even act
as introductory guides for individual users.
Please email [log in to unmask] if you have suggestions for additional
material that might usefully be added to this collection of slides and
guides.
** Reminder about telnet closure
-----------------------------
Do you still access NISS via our telnet interface ? If so, can we take
this opportunity to remind you that this access route will shut down at
the beginning of January 1999, and that you should investigate the use of
an alternative interface (e.g. a graphical web browser) as soon as
possible.
Earlier editions of NISS Advisor (issues 124 and 128) have already
commented on the rationale behind our decision to close the telnet service,
and we are now simply concerned that the few remaining telnet users are
not 'taken by surprise' in January, but will have had time to adjust to
using the graphical web interface before the new year. If you have any
questions about this matter please email [log in to unmask]
** Do you use BIOMED ?
-------------------
Sites which have already joined the CHEST agreement and use the NISS
BIOMED service (http://biomed.niss.ac.uk/) may be interested in the
following details about the current trial of additional data. The message
has been distributed by CHEST and any comments about the trial should be

Addition of 3 subsets of "Current Contents" and "SportDISCUS"
to Biomedical Service with Ovid Web Interface
------------------------------------------------------------
Three subsets of "Current Contents" -
'Clinical Medicine'
'Life Sciences' and
'Social and Behavioural Sciences'
- have been added to the NISS Biomedical Server with the Ovid interface for
a trial period of one month - until 15th December.
These are available for free trial only to sites with a subscription to the
service, using normal ATHENS usernames and passwords.
Although the data in these databases are available as part of the current
ISI Service (though in different format), CHEST would like to know if they
are a useful resource in the NISS / Ovid Biomedical Service.
Please email [log in to unmask] with your comments.
"SportDISCUS", also with the Ovid interface, has been added for trial
purposes and again will be available to authorised users of the Biomedical
Service.
It is anticipated that a trial for Current Contents and SportDISCUS will be
available to non-Biomed subscribers in January 1999.
Pricing for Current Contents and SportDISCUS will be confirmed by
mid-December '98.
