The British Council has a vacancy based in its Manchester office.
The British Council promotes educational, cultural and technical
co-operation between Britain and other countries. The Council's work is
designed to establish long-term and worldwide partnerships and to improve
international understanding. The Council's global network of 209 libraries
has half a million members who borrowed 10 million books, videos and tapes
during 1996-97. In many countries the traditional lending libraries using
modern information technology have become key access points for information
about Britain.
The British Council's information services promote Britain and facilitate
social and economic development. Electronic Information Services combines
library and IT expertise to provide an advisory and product development
service to British Council offices worldwide.
Information Services Developer, Electronic Information Services
This post provides information on the acquisition, installation and use of
electronic information in Council libraries. Interpersonal skills and
teamworking are as important as technical competence and information skills.
The postholder will carry out research into new developments in IT relevant
to library and information work, and greatly contribute to the automation of
libraries in the Council around the world. The post will provide the
opportunity for overseas travel.
You will have working knowledge of DOS and Windows and a good understanding
of computer hardware. You will be able to author web pages using HTML, and
demonstrate awareness of the Internet in a library environment. You will be
familiar with one or more library automation systems and will be able to
give evidence of research using electronic and paper-based sources. Ideally
you will have knowledge of CD-ROM networking, Windows NT and training
experience.
It is essential that you have either a degree or postgraduate qualification
in library or information science (or equivalent). You will be able to
demonstrate good team working, communication and interpersonal skills and be
self-motivated.
Salary: Starting salary £12,130 - £14,990 depending on experience, plus
non-contributory pension scheme.
Contract: two-year fixed-term contract.
