Short Course: MULTIPLE IMPUTATION IN PRACTICE
JO SCHAFER
Chilworth Manor Conference Centre Southampton
Supported by the ESRC
under the Analysis of Large and Complex Datasets Programme
Organised by CASS which is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
SCPR and the University of Southampton, with the University of
Surrey
Outline
Multiple imputation (MI) is a general paradigm for the analysis of
incomplete data. Each missing datum is replaced by m>1 simulated
values, producing m simulated versions of the complete data. Each
version is analysed by standard complete-data methods, and the results
are combined using simple rules to produce inferential statements that
incorporate missing data uncertainty. This short course will focus on
the practice of MI for real statistical problems in modern computing
environments. We will begin with an overview of MI, comparing it to
other methods currently in use. The remaining time will be devoted to
procedures and software for generating MI's described in a recent book
by Schafer (1997). Data examples will be drawn from biostatistics,
social and behavioural sciences, and complex surveys, with extended
discussion and practical advice.
Target Audience
The course is aimed at statisticians and social scientists interested
in new statistical methods for handling missing values in the analysis
of large datasets.
Course Materials
Participants will receive a copy of Joe Schafer's 1997 book (see
below) as well as copies of transparencies and handouts. The aim is
to mail the book to participants on receipt of payment for the course.
The Instructor
Joe Schafer is Assistant Professor of Statistics at The Pennsylvania
State University where he has taught since 1992.
Duration
The course will begin with registration and coffee at 10.30 a.m.
Wednesday 20 May 1998 and end around 5.00 p.m. Thursday 21 May 1998.
Reading
The original monograph introducing the method of multiple imputation
is
Rubin, D.B. (1987) Multiple Imputation for Nonresponse in Surveys.
New York: Wiley.
The text-book to which the course will refer is
Schafer, J.L. (1997) Analysis of Incomplete Multivariate Data.
London: Chapman and Hall.
An overview of other methods for handling missing data is provided by
Little, R.J.A. and Rubin, D.B. (1987) Statistical Analysis with
Missing Data. New York: Wiley.
GENERAL ARRANGEMENTS
Fee
It is possible to attend either the course or the workshop or both.
The fees are stlg180 for the course, (to include course materials, the
book, coffee, tea, lunch), stlg45 for the workshop (to include coffee,
tea, lunch) or stlg215 for both. Because of ESRC support, a number of
bursaries are available to UK university students, academic staff or
ESRC-funded researchers which reduce the fee to stlg80 for the course,
stlg25 for the workshop or stlg100 for both.
Location
Chilworth Manor Conference Centre, Southampton. Tel: 01703 767333,
