The Internet is not only an invaluable tool for gaining access to
information, but also allows the user to become a provider of
information. As a librarian/information professional your role in
navigating through this system is fast becoming vital.
How will this event help you?
This event will give you a practical introduction to the Internet and
help you understand first hand the range of services and facilities
which confront the typical user. It will guide you through:
* the types of information available on the Internet
* what tools to use to access this information
* the practical uses of the Internet by libraries and information
services - with examples of innovative projects
* choosing an Internet connection service provider
* different forms of service delivery
* different methods of collection
* the range of services available: Email, World Wide Web, Bulletin

Features
The day is illustrated with live on-line sessions to illustrate the
Internet services and conventions. The afternoon consists of assisted
hands-on sessions to enable you to try out a selection of Internet tools
and services.

What is it? How big is it? A good information resource?
Who uses it? Commercialisation, how to join, costs and issues to
consider.
10.40 Session2: Library and information developments on the Internet,
public/academic/commercial - major initiatives in the USA and 3 UK
initiatives
11.20 Coffee
11.35 Session 3: Accessing information
Web browsers, web authoring tools, navigation aids,
including hyperlinks and search engines
12.30 Lunch
2.00 Hands-on - introductory demonstration, some set exercises and
freedom to experiment
