The British Council - Electronic Information Services Team
With a presence in over 100 countries, The British Council promotes
international educational, cultural and technical co-operation. Our
Electronic Information Services team is responsible for delivering library
automation around the world. Over the next two years the team will be
responsible for a migration project to rollout a single library system
(Alice) to many overseas offices. We are recruiting two temporary posts to
manage and carry out this project. The posts are available up to end March
1999 and are based in our Manchester office. These are high profile
positions and offer the opportunity to greatly contribute to the automation
of libraries in the Council around the world. It is essential for both posts
that you have either a degree or postgraduate qualification in library or
information science (or equivalent work experience).
Library Systems Officer
This post will provide support, advice and training on the acquisition,
installation and use of library systems in Council libraries. Interpersonal
and training skills are as important as technical competence and information
skills. The postholder will carry out training overseas and provide remote
support for Alice. They will greatly contribute to the automation of
libraries in the Council around the world.
Duties: implement training in Alice; provide remote support for the Alice
library system; co-ordinate internal communication relating to library
automation; assist in the development of electronic information products.
Experience/skills/qualifications:
Essential: Training and/or presentation skills;
administrative/organisational skills; good telephone manner; good
interpersonal and communication skills; experience of using various modules
of library systems; attention to detail; methodical; problem solving.
Desirable: Experience of HTML authoring; understanding of computer
networking.
Salary: £12 - £15k. The post is available immediately.
Alice Project Manager
This post will manage the Alice migration programme and provide support and
training on the installation and use of Alice in Council libraries.
Experience of project management and excellent customer care skills are
important, as is the ability to manage contracts. The postholder will manage
a remote support service for Alice as well as co-ordinating the rollout of
the system. They may also be required to carry out training overseas. This
is a high profile position and offers the opportunity to greatly contribute
to the automation of libraries in the Council around the world.
Duties: Manage and implement installation and training in Alice; provide and
manage remote support for the Alice library system.
Experience/skills/qualifications:
Essential: Knowledge of library automation systems (preferably Alice);
experience of implementing IT systems; experience of project management;
training and/or presentation skills; organisational skills; good telephone
manner; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work to
tight deadlines; ability to manage contracts. Desirable: Experience of
managing staff; management or delivery of helpdesk services to library staff
Salary: £17 - £21k. The post is available immediately.
