Finding and Using Digital Images on the Web: A Joint TASi/Netskills Workshop

The use of images has greatly enhanced computer-based teaching and
learning materials. Although including images is relatively trivial for
anyone with basic authoring skills the use of the most appropriate format,
software and image preparation technique can greatly enhance the
effectiveness of the material.
This workshop covers issues such as finding appropriate images on the
Internet, file size reduction and good design practise.
It is suitable for researchers and academics from
any discipline, university administrators, librarians and computing
service staff. It will be of particular interest to members of the
academic community who have an interest in finding and using digital
images in their teaching.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered include:
scene-setting overview of the use of images
manipulation and preparation of images for use on the Web
design issues when using images and graphics the appropriate use of
various formats
hands-on sessions on creating Web pages containing images and graphics
demonstrations of various techniques for including images on the Web
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
incorporated images into Web pages
searched for appropriate images sources on the Internet
investigated methods of file size reduction
seen a variety of techniques used for including images in Web pages
investigated image formats such as JPEG and GIF explored the key design
issues associated with image based material
Participants also have an opportunity to:
explore online tutorials for creating animated and transparent images
learn more about issues associated with images on the Web such as
copyright and metadata
investigate copyright and hardware and software issues
Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web and preferably
authored simple Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as
those for including images and hypertext links is desirable.
Experience in using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and
opening and closing applications such as a Web browser would be helpful.
Note that this workshop does NOT require programming skills from
participants, and so is not designed to provide Java or other programming
competencies.
The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher
education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant
