Dear All
I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself.
I am a postgraduate student currently working on my PhD with the IUCN
Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM) at Royal Holloway Institute for
Environmental Research, University of London. My research interest is in the
application of the ecosystem management approach to the conservation of
biodiversity in the UK.
Ecosystem management, also referred to as 'bioregional management' and the
'ecosystem approach', aims to integrate environmental, economic, social and
political needs in resource management and conservation at broad spatial
scales. It is a collaborative process that strives to reconcile the
promotion of economic opportunities and liveable communities with the
conservation of ecological integrity and biodiversity. It is not just
focused on conservation at large spatial scales.
Such a holistic approach to conservation has been widely implemented in the
USA, but this approach seems to be either lacking or less clearly defined in
the UK. It has been suggested for example, that the Environment Agency
advocates such an ecosystem approach via implementation of its LEAPs (local
environment agency plans) but this is a matter for some debate. What about
the other conservation bodies in the UK? I am currently trying to locate
examples of the ecosystem management approach in the UK that are implemented
by conservation bodies. Thus I would be keen to hear from anyone who has
involvement in conservation projects or knows of projects that encompass
some or all of the elements of ecosystem management (integrating
environmental, economic, social and political needs).
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards.
Craig Turner.
