Clinical governance will 'assure and improve clinical standards at local
level throughout the NHS. This includes action to ensure risks are
avoided, adverse effects are rapidly detected, openly investigated and
lessons learned, good practice is rapidly disseminated and systems are in
place to ensure continuous improvements in clinical care' (The new NHS:
modern, dependable. White Paper, December 1997)
Apparently all hospital doctors will be required to participate in the
national, external, clinical audit - once a year from 1999, and NHS trusts
will be required to produce their first clinical governance reports in
Spring. We have just received notification of a conference being put on bu
the British Journal of Health Care and Information Management taking place
in March 1999 which should be of interest to participants of these mailing
lists on Clinical Governance - enabling delegates to learn from the
experiences of other NHS Trusts, find out more about the 'three cardinal
stages of clinical governance' and learn how to collect and use evidence
for better healthcare.
Here are the details...please print this e-mail out and pass to any
colleagues who you think might find it of interest/use:

WEDNESDAY 3rd MARCH 1999
The Conference Forum
The Sedgwick Centre London E1
Although clinical governance has been forumlated to build on, and
strengthen, existing methods of professional self-regulation, systems for
assessing clinical performance are still very much in their infancy.
Drawing from the practical experience of eight NHS organisations, this
conference demonstrates the cardinal stages in the adoption of clinical
governance.
The conference progresses logically from where to start through to how to
measure clinical outcomes for effectiveness.
This conference will examine:
1. Where to start:
* key considerations; and
* vital human resource and organisational foundations
2. The three essential components for achieving clinical governance:
* ensuring appropriate care - deciding on what should be done
* enabling efficiency - frameworks for delivering appropriate care; and
* measuring effectiveness - did it work and can we improve?

Course fees are £270 + VAT (Total: £317.25) per delegate.
