				CALL FOR PAPERS

		Special Issue of the Journal of End User Computing on
				Medical Informatics

				  Spring 2000

Guest Editors

Paul Divirgilio, University of Toronto and Tom Gough, University of Leeds

The Journal of End User Computing (JEUC) invites authors to submit papers
for a special issue on Medical Informatics.

The enormous growth in the use of communications and information technology
in all aspects of healthcare provision from the use of computers to store
and access patient records through to computer-assisted medical procedures
present healthcare professionals (and their clients) with a wide range of
opportunities and challenges in the delivery of healthcare.

Submissions for this special issue of JEUC are expected to focus on the
actual and potential impact on professionals and patients of the use of
computer-based systems in the delivery of healthcare. Contributions are
sought on the value of the information available, on the ease-of-use of the
systems providing the information, on the changes, if any, in the
interrelationships between the various participants in the healthcare
delivery process, on the effects on the making of decisions, on any changes
in the quality of the care provided. Lessons may be learned from success or
failure and contributions would be welcomed from any (or all!) of those
engaged in, or affected by, the design, development or operation of
computer-based information systems in the healthcare field. In the complex
environment of medical informatics defining the 'end user(s)' could be an
interesting issue perhaps?

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:-

* Hospital Information Systems
* Community Care Systems
* Clinical Information Systems
* Electronic Patient Records
* Security and Confidentiality
* Healthcare Information Infrastructure
* Healthcare Information Policies and Procedures
* Expert Systems and Decision Support
* Knowledge Management
* Medical Imaging
* Bioinformatics
* Use of the Internet in Healthcare
* Telemedicine

Submissions: all original papers submitted for this special issue will be
reviewed according to Journal of End User Computing Guidelines. Authors are
asked to submit four copies of their papers by June 15, 1999. Manuscripts
must follow standard JEUC guidelines as stated in each issue of the journal,
and should be no more than 25 pages of double spaced text,
including tables, figures and references. Papers must not be under review by
another
publication. Final, revised, accepted papers are due by December 15, 1999.
