There are now four subjects which should be avoided in pub discussions;
sex, politics, religion and...
yup, HTML editors! :-)
I have been using various flavours of HoTMetaL Pro since '94 and keep
coming back to it. The reason I like it is it enables me to easily
toggle between content and HTML 'hats'. A recent magazine review
described it as a jack of all trades and master of none. That is
probably fair comment. However, as I can only afford one application the
'jack of all trades' is proving to be the best choice. I have just spent
a month trying out the latest Hotdog and although there are facilities
in it that I found useful, overall it slowed me down considerably
because it doesn't have the minimal tag view of HotMetal.
Given the financial resources I would probably have a package of
applications which would probably include NetObjects Fusion.
Nevertheless, HoTMetaL would remain the workhorse application for me.
Others may come to a different conclusion and it is important to try out
applications for yourself. For example, part of my preference towards
HoTMetaL may be down to familiarity.
One other piece of advice is to make sure you are aware of and
understand the HTML that your application is creating. Some of the
applications that present themselves as making web site creation a
doddle (HTML, who needs to know about that), create the most horrendous
mess of redundant and invalid code.
