The answer lies in the soil, or more accurately, the bits of fluff you
have picked up from your (actual) desktop. Undo the mouse, take out the
ball, use a steret and a needle to scrape the caked on crud that's stuck
to the contacts. replace the ball, do up the mouse and hey presto, it'll
be fine again.

Several, e.g the Windows for Dummies series, but usually it's better to
learn by trial and error, and asking pertinent questions such as yours.
