On the subject of the Government Secure Intranet, the network based
on internet technology which is intended to link up all government
bodies in the next few years (see previous Bulletins), Mr Assirati
said initial take-up by departments had been “a little disappointing”,
with only the Cabinet Office, the Treasury, CCTA, CITU and the
Department for Education and Employment already connected.
However, he said it was still intended that all major departments
would sign on by the end of the financial year.
The lengthy security accreditation process was the main delaying
factor, he said, as all departments had to look at internal security

arrangements
before connecting. However, he said the government did not favour
making connection to GSI mandatory for departments to speed things
up, because this could lead to pressure to relax security standards,
and also to arguments over cost, which at the moment are met by
connecting
departments. “If it was a central requirement, they might then push
for central funding”, he said.
