Subject: home networks
Several people have indicated that they have networks at home.
I have a few questions:
What, in very broad terms, would be the cost of networking,
say, 4 PCs?
Network Cards for each PC @£35 4 port hub £50 Cables £100.
What are the main benefits of so doing?
Sharing resources (printers, tape, backup, Internet connection)
Any drawbacks?
Installing the cabling properly is a pain. I moved in to my present house 5 years ago and it was last weekend before I finally removed the last cable across the landing and over the banisters (which I installed to get us going on the day we moved in)
Who uses the computers?
Me
Wife is an independent consultant. Heavy user (MS Office, email, web, SPSS), high expectations, complete unwillingness to spend any time learning to use the tools but still expects to do the most complex things, doesn't accept my explanation that her computer hangs sometimes because she is running MS Windows.
Son age 13. At last able to do tech support for wife. (MS Office, email, web, Corel Draw, CAD, VB, logo, games, multimedia)
Daughter 9. (Word, Corel, Web authoring, games multimedia)
If children, how many and how old and how do you know they're
doing their homework and not downloading anal-sex jpegs?
Trust, and the knowledge that their cyber aware dad can monitor the proxy log files. Silas probably down loads the porn at his friends house with parents in happy ignorance.
I have one completely disinterested (in computers) wife (although
I've always sensed that if only I could get a sexy-looking box
hooked up in the kitchen she might go for it, a 6-year-old and
a 3-year-old who are whizzes with mice and improving all the time
with trad. keyboard skills. They have a Pentium Multimedia PC
for their own use but I can see a point approaching when hooking
everything up together would make sense. Probably the time is not
now, but not far off.
There is something on the Web to wow everybody
