I am interested in piloting a self care manual in our local co-op. This is
an american idea developed, I think, by HMOs where telephone advice is used
frequently and tied into the manual. I would like to identify our most
frequent callers and target them with a manual - describing co-op services,
how to access them, guidelines on managing minor illness, recognising the
danger signs of more serious illness, patient FAQs. Out Triage Drs will be
able to give advice and refer to appropriate pages in the manula to back it
up. This is of course similar to the NHS Advice lines that are going to be
set up later this year - but I suspect will be fatally flawed. I believe you
can purchase patient advice booklets but I'd really like to have a look at
one of the american versions. This whole idea is predicated on the
assumption that you can change people's behaviour by educating them (not
always a safe assumption!) Heavy users of the co-op are the group in which
any changes will be easiest to spot. Does any one out there know anything
about these manuals or could point me in the direction of any reearch or
info on them?
