I don't know about this NHSnet thing nor do I know what it actually
does.
However, here is a distillation you might find useful:
- Global networks (like NHSnet) shall be referred to as GNW
- Local networks shall be referred to as LNW
This is GNW vs LNW:
1. Who are the main players:
- GNW: 35,000 GPs, 60,000 hospital doctors, over 100,000 nurses, ?1000s
of pharmacies, 1000 hospitals, 2 million admin staff, etc.
- LNW: 50 doctors, 100 nurses, 1-2 hospitals, 5-10 pharmacies
2. Number of networks:
- GNW: 1
- LNW: 550
3. Who owns it:
- GNW: who knows!
- LNW: you do
4. Who is the provider?
- GNW: one (the state)
- LNW: any that can demonstrate value for money
5. Architecture:
- GNW: several
- LNW: one
6. Business model:
- GNW: driven by the state
- LNW: driven by you according to your own criteria
7. Security:
- GNW: you gonna have to trust 1 million people. Security is not under
your control either.
- LNW: you gonna have to trust your colleagues. Security is under your
control too
8. Central patient datavase:
- GNW: very likely
- LNW: possibly
All in all, I know where to put my smart money.
