Not much help, but with the retrospectoscope I have learnt not to
challenge new patients with absurd ideas/treatments etc until I have had
a chance to lay on the schmooze with a shovel,and established some
rapport.
*Then* Mr Nice bows out and Mr Nasty takes over. The line I take is the
old one about having to stand by my professional opinion. I can only act
in accordance with my conscience, and if that is at variance with the
patient, then I apologise but stand firm. If they have been pleased with
the service they get up to that point, they usually give in.
