<<We propsed this for my PCG, but was dissallowed by the HA. Although there
is
nothing specific in HSC's stopping it, nonetheless there has to be a
responsible officer-the chair- and it is very difficult to see how this can
be split. Plus it makes external communication very difficult and board
meetings impossible.>>
Can you appeal against the HA decision?
As for splitting responsibility, it is obvious that no-one in your HA ever
reads any decent management books. The standard top man setup in big
business has been Chairman and CEO--for God knows how many years now. In
fact someone noted about 40 years ago (alright it was Peter Drucker) that
really the jobs which needed doing by those two people were probably far
too many and the idea of VPs in charge of various departments was born.
Now in any decent big company the VPs take things very seriously indeed and
are indeed held responsible for screw-ups in their divisions. The level of
responsibility of a VP in any of the majors far exceeds that of a HA or
trust chief exec. As for PCGs---well I'll say no more about that.
External comms and board meetings----not impossible, it is the mediaeval
mindset of NHS management which is the problem, not such incredibly
sensible concepts as job-sharing.
Declan
with apologies for going on but I am exercising restraint, honest.
