For some curious reason, the city of Hull has always operated its
own telephine ssystem, from way back when all the more-or-less
independent telephone systems in the UK were consolidated under
the GPO, of blessed memory. No one is quite sure why!
My own theory is that no one in Whitehall knew where Hull is;
either that, or it was given its proper name (Kingston) and the folk
in Whitehall thought it was in the West Indies. Either way, Hull
still operates its own local telephone service; they use BT
standards throught, but invent their own tariffs.
