We are just in the process of rewriting our partnership agreement and have
(subject to lawyers' jargon) agreed on unpaid leave as follows:
After a qualifying period of one year in the practice partners are entitled to
1/12 per year of service up to a maximum of 6/12. First refusal is based on
seniority, but once taken, the person who takes leave goes to the bottom of
the list.
Notice of leave must be given before the 1st of Jan of the year preceding the
proposed leave.
The partner taking the leave gets all of of his/her drawings throughout the
period of absence, but is responsible for all locum costs; they have to
organise the locum cover, but once away, the practice has the absolute right
to change those arrangments if necessary.
The leave may be a true sabbatical ie for education, research, etc., but could
be for any purpose at all, including lying on a beach for 6/12.
