There is a lot of talk about cutting costs by amalagamating NHS Trusts.
There is also the following paragraph from the Effective Health Care
Bulletin, vol 2, no. 8, December 1996:
"There is no evidence that cost savings can be secured merely by
increasing scale in acute hospitals beyond 200 beds, and it is likely
that large hospitals (above 600 beds) display diseconomies of scale,
though these inefficiencies may be offset in other ways"
I would value any comments and "gold standard" references on this topic.
