It can, but having 10,000 directory in a file system is not awfully
elegant.
I would dump the letters in a database and get the browser to display
on the fly.
If letters are created in Word (others do the same too), you have the
option of giving file description, title etc when you save the file.
This information is displayed in a pop up box when you hover over the
file in explorer. If you have IE4, you can even set explorer to
display thumbnails of the files.
If you have something like FrontPage, you can even build the records
(letters) as a local/LAN Web site complete with a full list table of
contents and a key word search facility. You may even add a java
applet site map on the home page.
I did this with a book that had 3000 Word directories and was in a mess
until good old html came to the rescue :-)
Lots of solutions. The key here is to keep it simple but consistent.
Happy to advise further on local Web solutions.
